Mandarin 1 Homework #13
I have rechecked the recitation of "The Colour of Spring," and the majority of the students can now recite it proficiently. In today's pinyin class, we introduced the usage of the "介母" in pinyin. The "介母" is used between the initial and final sounds, serving as a transitional sound. The "介母" includes the sounds "i," "u," and "ü." In today’s class, we mainly focused on the usage and of "i" and "u" as the "介母" and we will cover "ü" in the upcoming lessons.
We completed the study of Unit 6 in the Chinese textbook today. We reviewed the pronunciation, writing, and meanings of the 13 characters from the previous lesson and practiced combining characters to form words. We also learned six new characters (自, 飞, 里, 爬, 游, 林) and required students to recognize and understand their meanings. Using the characters and words we've learned so far, we practiced describing pictures through words and took turns answering the question "What is on the mountain?" Students were able to pick the correct words to describe objects in the pictures. At home, you can ask your child questions like "...上有什么?(What is on the...?)" to encourage them to practice using various object nouns.
We also learned a new poem today, "Birds Fly Freely". I expect the students to be able to read and recite the entire poem. Additionally, there are two points for the students to understand:
1. In the title, the "地" is not pronounced as "dì" but as a light tone "de," indicating the manner, degree, or state of an action and used after an adjective. In "自由地飞", the "地" emphasizes the way of flying (freely). Here, "的" cannot replace "地" ("的" indicates possession, similar to 's in English).
2. In the third sentence, "有" is stuck together with "小鱼." Both "有" and "小" are third-tone characters, so following the "third tone sandhi" rule, "有" should be pronounced as a second tone during reading. Similarly, in the title, the fifth and sixth sentences, the "小" (xiǎo) in "小鸟" (xiǎo niǎo) should also be pronounced as the second tone.
After class, please complete the following exercises:
1.Listen to the recording and repeat all the content of Unit 6 of Chinese textbook. Please recite “Birds Fly Freely”.
2. Listen to the recording and repeat the content from the Unit 14 of Pinyin textbook.
3. Complete exercises from page 35 to 41 in Chinese workbook 1B.
4. Complete exercises from the Unit 14 of Pinyin workbook: Sections 一, 二, 四and五.
5. Review all the Chinese characters we have learned frome Unit 1 to Unit6. Write five characters every day, each character five times. Please read while writing. Try to form words using those characters.
There will be no class on December 23rd and 30th. Classes will resume on January 6th 2024. Please keep practicing at home. Please feel free to email me if you have any questions.
Wishing everyone a joyful holiday!
