Mandarin 1 Homework #9
Today we learned the pronunciation and writing of the initial consonants "j," "q," and "x", and practiced combining them with the previously learned finals in reading exercises. We reviewed the pronunciation, meanings, and writing of 12 characters from the last class (上、中、下、左、右、来、去、出、入、坐、立、走) and learned pronunciation and meanings of six new characters (长、写、字、它、最、忙). We also read together two riddles on page 22 and identified the answers. Ask your children what the answers are. We practiced forming words using the newly learned characters.
I would like to emphasize:
1.when pronouncing the initials "j," "q," and "x" with the final "ü," the two dots on "ü" should be omitted in writing, but the pronunciation remains unchanged. For example, the Pinyin for "去" is written as “qù”, not “qǜ ” . Also, it is important to note that "j," "q," and "x" cannot be combined with "u" (乌) in pronunciation.
2.In order to improve the language fluency in speaking , when the character "一" is followed by a character with the fourth tone, "一" should be pronounced as the second tone "yí." For example, "一片" should be pronounced as "yí piàn," not "yī piàn." When the character following "一" is in the first, second, or third tone, "一" should be pronounced as the fourth tone "yì." For instance, "一只" is pronounced as "yì zhī," "一群" is pronounced as "yì qún," and "一起" is pronounced as "yì qǐ." Another example is "一左一右," pronounced as "yì zuǒ yí yòu." Please note that when "一" is read individually, it is pronounced as the first tone "yī."
Please complete the following exercises:
1.Listen to the recording and repeat all characters , phrases and ‘Reading’ from Unit 4 of the Chinese textbook.
2.Listen to the recording and repeat the content from Unit 10 of Pinyin textbook.
3.Complete exercises from page 22 to 27 in Chinese workbook 1B.
4.Complete exercises from the Unit 10 of Pinyin workbook: Sections 一, 二, 三1, and 四.
